After a catastrophic fire destroys much of a community, a homeless dog is found singed and ash-covered. Someone calls her Wombat, even though she is not a wombat, and the nickname remains. With the town devastated, Wombat settles near a makeshift community center in an old brick warehouse that largely survived the flames. Wombat believes she is a “destiny dog,” guided by an inner voice she calls Voice.
Voice tells her that somewhere out there is a special person meant to be hers. As Wombat waits amid the aftermath of the fire, she must hold on to that belief while searching for the person she is meant to find. Told from Wombat’s perspective, the story follows her through loss, uncertainty, and the possibility of a new connection.
