Wombat Waiting

Wombat is a homeless dog, not a wombat at all, but the nickname takes hold after she is found singed and covered in ash following a catastrophic fire. The disaster has destroyed much of the surrounding community, leaving Wombat in a devastated town and searching for somewhere safe to belong. She settles near a makeshift community center housed in an old brick warehouse that survived the flames. There, amid the early effort to recover, she begins trying to make sense of what happened and what might come next.

Wombat believes she is a “destiny dog.” An inner feeling she calls “Voice” tells her that a special person is out there—someone she is meant to find. As she waits near the community center, that conviction gives her a reason to keep going through uncertainty, loss, and the unsettled life left behind by the fire. The story follows her search for belonging and the surprising friendships that begin to take shape around her, balancing the damage of disaster with compassion, resilience, and the possibility of a new connection.
