Leaves of Grass

In 1855, Walt Whitman introduces Leaves of Grass as a startling new kind of American poetry: a self-published volume of twelve poems shaped by Transcendentalist ideas and an expansive faith in the natural world. Rather than presenting a conventional plot, the collection moves through declarations, observations, celebrations, and meditations. Whitman’s free verse breaks from familiar poetic forms, while his attention to the senses and the human body gives the work an unusually direct, physical presence.

The poems repeatedly widen their scope, moving from individual experience toward nature, community, spiritual possibility, and the many forms of human life. Whitman also confronts subjects that nineteenth-century readers often considered unsuitable for poetry, including sexual love and frank bodily experience.
