Set in the turbulent Parisian underworld of the early nineteenth century, Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables follows Jean Valjean, a former peasant imprisoned for nineteen years after stealing bread for his starving family. Hardened by prison, Valjean finds a chance to change when an act of compassion by a priest keeps him from returning to custody. He assumes a new identity, becomes a successful industrialist and mayor, and devotes himself to helping the poor.
Valjean’s past, however, remains a threat. Inspector Javert relentlessly pursues him, convinced that a criminal cannot truly reform. Valjean also carries a promise to protect Cosette, the young daughter of Fantine, whose poverty has driven her into prostitution. As Cosette grows up and falls in love with a young revolutionary during a period of political unrest, Valjean must struggle to keep her safe while evading Javert and confronting the demands of conscience, justice, and redemption.
