In this imaginative account, their partnership begins with a journey to the Cape of Good Hope before carrying them to pre-Revolutionary America and back again. Their story is framed by the Reverend Wicks Cherrycoke, a clergyman of dubious orthodoxy who entertains his extended family on a cold December evening. Claiming to have accompanied Mason and Dixon, Cherrycoke blends biography with history, fantasy, legend, speculation, and fabrication. The result is an unpredictable journey through the Enlightenment’s darker reaches, where the central question is not only what happened to the surveyors, but how much of their story—and their narrator’s—can be trusted.
