In 2011, Ross Ulbricht, a twenty-six-year-old programmer with libertarian convictions, created the Silk Road, a hidden online marketplace built around the idea of commerce beyond government control. Operating on the Dark Web, the site allowed buyers and sellers to exchange drugs, hacking tools, forged documents, counterfeit money, and other contraband.
